Mark Field, MP for the Cities of London and Westminster, visited the church today as part of a fact-finding mission to learn more about the work of Your Credit Union.
He said, 'It is great to be hosting this at St Mary-le-Bow which is a community-based church here in the City of London and very much focuses on issues of social justice. The important thing is to recognise that it has to be grass-roots driven. People with a strong relationship with the City, one hopes those sorts of people will engage in this.'
St Mary-le-Bow is the union’s first corporate member in the City. The church has deposited £15,000 with the Kensington-based union which provides ethical loans and savings accounts.
The Rector added, 'The Church of England is actively encouraging the growth of credit unions, notably to undermine the more unscrupulous lenders and to promote mutualism. The parish has invested the maximum sum possible and is keen to see more personal account holders across the City.'
