 Going bananas

St Mary-le-Bow's tower sported three giant Fair Trade bananas on 6th March to show that we support the current campaign to get more people buying and eating Frair Trade products, especially bananas.

Our associated businesses joined in to help: Bow Bells Flowers sold bunches of Fair Trade bananas and The Place Below had Fair Trade Banana Crumble on the menu.

 The future's orange

The World's Original Marmalade Festival 2009 was held in the Lake District village of Dacre and included a service in St Andrew's Church.

The Rector of St Mary-le-Bow (the church was immortalised in the poem 'Oranges and Lemons') preached the sermon and joined the judging panel for one of the many competitions. He also met Britain's most famous marmalade connoisseur, Paddington Bear...

The 2008 St Francis of Assisi Lecture was given by the Rt Revd James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool, on 9th October 2008.

The lecture was convened by the London Churches Environmental Network. It aims to provide a focal point for environmental issues, linking London with the national picture and coordinating church action.

 Recovering the calm

A new prayer space guide was launched in June 2008 at St Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace.

The guide offers practical guidance for employers in providing high-quality prayer rooms and quiet space for employees. The guide has been created through a collaboration of various agencies of which St Mary-le-Bow was the first to be involved.

On 10th December staff from the Bank of Ireland, recently arrived at the new Bow Bells House, formed a substantial choir and sang a rousing chorus of Christmas carols.

The aim was to raise funds for St Mary-le-Bow's Young Homeless charity. The result was a staggering £1,195 collected from kindly passers-by and augmented by a generous donation from the Bank of Ireland. A huge 'thank you' to all Bank of Ireland staff for this tremendous contribution.

 Admiral Phillip remembered

The annual service of commemoration of Admiral Arthur Phillip took place on 22nd January.

The Rt Hon. the Lord Mayor of London laid a wreath beneath Admiral Phillip's bust in the 'Australian Corner'. The address was given by Dr Kevin Fewster AM, director of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. Afterwards, guests went on to lunch at Grocers' Hall.
